Purple Raku Mask Raku is an old process of firing clay which originated in Japan. To gain the metallic effect, modern-day craftsmen place red-hot pieces in a bucket of sawdust so that the smoke caused by the burning wood chips brings out the unique irridescent colors for which Raku pottery is famous. Bits of combustible material are applied to the art works to give them their characteristic black lines.

Raku is pulled from the kiln red hot to create metallic reds, purples, greens and blues.

Heather Chapman of Maple Ridge, British Columbia, has been creating raku pottery since 1990.
